Art that heals wounded hearts, music that obliterates barriers--these are lofty ambitions, indeed. Yet such is the vision of internationally renowned spiritual leader, pastor, author and now recording impresario Bishop T.D. Jakes.
"Music is such a powerful universal language that transcends denominations and cultures," the charismatic Jakes says. "One of my goals has always been to be a bridge between races and cultures and denominations. Music is a wonderful way to bridge the gaps that exist in our society.
In 1999 Jakes turned to his own Potter's House choir, releasing the critically-lauded Live From The Potter's House with T.D. Jakes & The Potter's House Mass Choir. Billboard magazine proclaimed that release one of the year's best gospel albums. In late November 2000, Jakes announced his newest venture, record label Dexterity Sounds, launched in partnership with EMI Gospel. Dexterity has produced 8 projects, and 6 of them have received Grammy nominations. In January 2007 Dexterity announced it's new distribution partnership with Rhino, an affiliate of Warner Entertainment. Dexterity Sounds is dedicated to creating new recordings based on themes from Jakes' books and theatrical productions.
Jakes' vision is to release music with real relevance to people's lives. "We have an opportunity to bring diverse music with a diverse message. It relates not only to the salvation message, but messages that focus on life skills--parenting, marriages, dealing with the totality of the Christian experience--not just the worship experience."
